Located next to the Alpine Meadow Museum that opened in 1996, Colombire’s latest additions to the hamlet include the traditional “remuage”ecomuseum. This development was made possible by reconstructing three authentic farming chalets (called “mayens” in Swiss French) that came originally from the Crans-Montana region. This difficult task - which involved rebuilding the chalets using traditional building methods - was motivated by a desire to protect our shared architectural heritage.
Colombire’s new ecomuseum complements the new-look Alpine farming museum and the recently rebuilt chalets which are reached via the pathway. The new
facility explains in an educational and interesting way how traditional “vertical farming” was done to meet the needs of cattle and crops (cattle driving from village to village, living in high-altitude chalets and managing the land).
Tours start from the “Relais” by reservation and are possible in several languages (French-German-English-Italian), guaranteeing all visitors an enriching and special experience!
Make a date for your next school trip, corporate training day or walk to Colombire; see inside a traditional mountain chalet and find out why our ancestors made such long journeys up and down the mountains throughout the year; reflect on how it compares with the life we lead today, and try your hand at our fun activities!
